Might as well release Najib, says KJ after Zahid's DNAA

PETALING JAYA: The government might as well release Datuk Seri Najib Razak from jail, Khairy Jamaluddin has said in response to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi being granted to a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) for 47 graft charges related to Yayasan Akalbudi funds.

The former Umno Youth chief said freeing the former prime minister affectionately known by supporters as "Bossku" would bring more added value to the unity government in which both Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional were components in.

“Between ‘Bossku’ and Ahmad Zahid, the one that benefits Pakatan-Barisan more in stopping the ‘green wave’ is Najib.

“Might as well let Najib out. He will add more value,” he said on the latest episode of the Keluar Sekejap podcast on Wednesday (Sept 6).

To this, fellow co-host Shahril Hamdan said Najib's release could not be ruled out.

“Surely, ‘Bossku’ supporters will congratulate Ahmad Zahid for being free, but what about Najib?

“I don’t think that question can be avoided anymore.

“How much time will pass before this matter is resolved or cause tensions within Umno?” the former Umno information chief said.

Khairy further added that it was just a matter of time before Najib would be released.

“It's coming. Be it this year or next, I am sure 'Bossku' will not complete his full sentence,” the former Cabinet minister said.

In July 2020, Najib was sentenced by the Kuala Lumpur High Court to 12 years’ jail and a RM210mil fine after he was found guilty of seven charges of criminal breach of trust, money laundering and abuse of position in the RM42mil SRC International case in connection with the sovereign fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

On Aug 23 last year, the Federal Court rejected his final appeal and ordered him to serve his sentence.
