PETALING JAYA: More resources will be allocated for the upskilling of food and parcel delivery (p-hailing) riders, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
In a statement today (Aug 8), Anwar said the decision was made following a meeting with representatives of 24 p-hailing companies and five riders to understand the challenges and issues faced in the industry.
“The discussions among others revolved around rider income, social safety net, the need for upskilling and training. I also heard views and complaints from p-hailing operators that were operating outside of the Klang Valley and focused on providing services for rural areas.
“After hearing the views of both sides, the unity government has agreed to increase the allocation for upskilling initiatives and training that will be spearheaded by the Human Resources Ministry,” he said.
He added that p-hailing operators had given their commitment to him towards increased transparency and research on wage calculation for riders.
“This further research is important as by improving the wage rate of riders, the interests of consumers especially in rural areas, will remain prioritised so that the people will not be burdened while also taking into account the operators’ capabilities.
“This initiative proves that the government is sensitive and cares for the interests of all parties in increasing the income of the people and ensuring business continuity,” he said.
Also present at the meeting were Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil and Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar.
