Investigation into Si Hulk drinking water to be carried out by Domestic Trade Ministry

PETALING JAYA: An investigation into the online sale of Si Hulk brand drinking water will be carried out by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.

Its deputy minister Fuziah Salleh said the investigation is being conducted under the Trade Description Act 2011 to curb advertisements related to health products that were believed to be false and misleading.

She added the ministry will be collaborating with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Malaysian Competition Commission (MyCC) to curb any form of uncertified, illegal advertising of health products.

"If we see something that could be a scam, we need to file a police report. This is so that we can take action against misleading and false advertisements.

"So far we have not received any complaints related to this product, but I will ask for an investigation to be carried out to crack down on the sale of health products that do not comply with regulations," she told Sinar Harian on Saturday (Aug 5).

She urged those with information on the product to pass it on to the ministry.

Fuziah had earlier attended the Jualan Rahmah Tour programme at Tok Adis Night Market in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.

In a related matter, Fuziah also said companies that market health products must register their company and obtain approval from the Health Ministry before they are even allowed to market the products.

"When you want to market a product, your company must be registered and if the product makes certain claims or promises, there has to be scientific research and approval. If it has positive effects on health, it needs Health Ministry approval.

“Businesses must obey the law with approvals from the relevant ministries," she said.

In July, it was reported that business activities involving the drinking water factory run by the Si Hulk group in Johor had been shut down.

The halal certificate was also revoked for failing to comply with the standards set on June 3, 2021.

The Perak Fatwa Committee had previously ruled that the beliefs founded by Suhaini Mohammad or Si Hulk are deviant from Islamic teachings.

Perak Mufti Datuk Wan Zahidi Wan Teh had said the decision was made after the 221st Perak State Fatwa Committee Meeting which convened from Dec 9 to 11 in 2020.

Wan Zahidi said the group made fraudulent claims about the drinking water and the Si Hulk bottle by exploiting religious elements to attract buyers.

The teaching claimed that Si Hulk water is from the fountain of youth that was obtained by Prophet Khidir, thus allowing him to live until Judgment Day.

It is also claimed to be able to cure various external and internal diseases, outbreaks and prevent black magic.
