Charges meant to hobble me ahead of state polls, claims Sanusi

SELAYANG: Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor claims that the sedition charges levelled against him are meant to diminish his chances in the upcoming state elections.

Speaking to reporters before leaving the Selayang Court Complex on Tuesday (July 18), the caretaker Kedah mentri besar and Perikatan Nasional elections director claimed he was kept in the dark about the charges and only learnt of them through a local daily.

"I was picked up by police at around 3am today without any notice," he said.

He added that he was ready to cooperate and go to court but they insisted on arresting him at his residence in Kuala Lumpur.

"Most of the time what happens in the political arena is settled there itself," he said.

"My hope is that the six states will be won by Perikatan Nasional in the coming elections," he said.

Muhammad Sanusi was charged under the Sedition Act 1948 at two Sessions Courts on Tuesday.

For the first charge, he was accused of uttering a seditious statement that could incite disloyalty to the Rulers.

The second charge was in connection with his speech which questioned Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement on the Royal Decree and the establishment of the unity government.

He claimed trial to both charges.

Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor, Penang and Negri Sembilan go to the polls on Aug 12.
