STPM: Sarawak candidates achieve best results in 10 years


SIBU: Students in Sarawak have achieved the best-ever results for the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) exam since the modular system was introduced a decade ago, says state education director Datuk Dr Azhar Ahmad.

"For the 2022 STPM exam, the average cumulative grade point average (CGPA) for Sarawak was 2.75, which is 0.04 better than the 2.71 in 2021," he said on Thursday (July 13).

The highest before was in 2018 with an average CGPA of 2.73.

When announcing the results at SMK Sacred Heart here, Dr Azhar said a total of 147 candidates statewide scored a perfect 4.0 CGPA compared to 95 candidates in 2021.

"In addition, a total of 1,922 candidates or 35.42% scored a CGPA of 3.0 and above," he added.

SMK Sacred Heart was the school with the highest average CGPA in the state, and among the 16 schools which achieved an average CGPA of 3.0 and above. The other shcools were SMK Chung Hua Sibu, SMK Bako Kuching, SMK Bandar Sibu, SMK Green Road Kuching, SMK Batu Lintang Kuching, SMK Saribas Betong, SMK Kampung Nangka Sibu, SMK Rosli Dhoby Sibu, SMK Petra Jaya Kuching, SMK St Thomas Kuching, SMK Durin Sibu, SMK Sungai Merah Sibu, SMK Pending Kuching, SMK Methodist Sibu, SMK Pusa Betong and SMK Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Gapor Kuching.

A total of 10 students were also picked as the best candidates namely Chan Jia Wei (SMK Green Road), Alicia Tnay Ai Xian (SMK Green Road), Chung Yuan Li (SMK Batu Lintang),Chan Xia Tian (SMK Batu Lintang), Chai Jia Xin (SMK Green Road), Leena Chin (SMK Batu Lintang), Khiew Zhi Jie (SMK Green Road), Long Yan Ching (SMK Rosli Dhoby), Ling Kah How (SMK Meradong (A)) and Fiona Hon Man Chee (SMK Green Road).

"Two special needs students, Sia Hui Xin of SMK Sacred Heart and Imenwell Isak of SMK Matang Jaya, also recorded outstanding results," he said.

Azhar said a total of 5,581 candidates sat for the STPM exam in 2022, compared to 5,769 candidates in 2021.

"Of the 5,581 candidates, 5,577 (99.93%) were school candidates while the remaining four (0.07%) were private candidates," he said.

All school candidates successfully obtained the STPM certificate in 2022 compared to 5,532 candidates (99.8%) in 2021.

Of the 5,577 school candidates, 23 (0.42%) passed all five subjects, 3,887 (71.64%) passed four subjects, 855 (15.76%) passed three subjects and 394 (7.26%) passed two subjects.

Some 205 candidates (3.78%) passed at least one subject.
