Four arrested over Gerik cable theft


IPOH: Police here have arrested three men as suspects in a case of the theft of cables belonging to Telekom Malaysia in Gerik.

This also led to the arrest of a 51-year-old man in Sungai Petani in Kedah two days later over the case on Sunday (July 2).

Gerik OCPD Supt Zulkifli Mahmood said on June 30, at about 4.30am, the public had called the police about a lorry parked in front of SM Gerik on Jalan Kenderong, with the suspects behaving suspiciously.

“The police patrol, and the criminal investigation division teams later managed to nab the three aged between 30 and 34 on KM26 of the East-West Highway.

“Checks inside the vehicle found a cable cutter, and 42 rolls of cables with the label ‘Telekom Malaysia’. The three suspects were arrested, and their remand has been extended until Wednesday (June 4),” he added.

He said Telekom Malaysia conducted checks, and confirmed that the cables belonged to them.

The estimated loss is about RM15,600.

Supt Zulkifli said on Sunday, at about 1.30pm, the other suspect believed to be involved in the case was arrested in Sungai Petani.

He will be remanded until Thursday. (July 5).

The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
