PM to meet ministry over concerts in varsities

BACHOK: The issue of concerts in public universities will be discussed on Wednesday when Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim meets the Higher Education Ministry.

The Prime Minister said that the government wants to safeguard students’ moral standards but added that he will listen to all views regarding the matter.

“I am not giving leeway for youths to be corrupted. It is important to safeguard your moral standards,” Anwar said as reported by Bernama.

“The government will probably relax rules around programmes such as cultural events, but they should be held at a small scale and in a controlled manner,” he said at the ‘Meet Anwar’ programme in Kelantan at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) here yesterday.

He was replying to a question raised by a student who wanted to know the government’s action following a concert that was held at a public university believed to be in Terengganu recently.

A 37-second video showing male and female students standing close together during the concert had gone viral on social media recently.
