30,648 notices issued for smoking in eateries last year


IPOH: A total of 30,648 compound notices with a total value of RM7.6mil were issued nationwide for smoking in eateries last year, says Health deputy director-general (Public Health) Datuk Dr Norhayati Rusli.

She said Selangor had the highest number of violations with 6,414 notices issued followed by Johor (3,095), Pahang (2,935), Perak (2,808) and Penang (2,725).

For the first four months of this year, she said a total of 14,872 compound notices were issued for a total value of RM3.72mil.

"The operations were carried out in hotspot areas throughout the country including eateries, public transport, bus stops, government premises, shopping complexes, public toilets, entertainment centres, clinics and hospitals as well as rest and service areas," she said here on Thursday (May 25) night.

Speaking to reporters after an integrated operation to enforce the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004, she said 424 notices under Section 32B of the Food Act 1983 were issued during the exercise for offences under Rule 11.

She added that 202 notices were issued at eateries, 108 at shopping complexes, 34 on public transport and 28 on government premises. – Bernama
