MACHANG: Kelantan has been allocated RM1bil to resolve water supply issues in the state, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the allocation will start from this year and will be handled by the Finance Ministry.
Recently, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government has agreed to take immediate measures to resolve the water supply problems faced by consumers in Kelantan irrespective of political affiliation.
Ahmad Zahid was speaking to reporters after Felcra Bhd’s Raya celebration at Bukit Tiu here yesterday, Bernama reported.
Also in attendance was Felcra chairman Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said the government through Felcra is identifying land for agro-food activities – a move that will indirectly give Felcra participants and the next generation the opportunity to be part of the agro-food industry’s workforce.
“Felcra has been assigned to help the government and the people in carrying out food production activities, in addition to assisting the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry to reduce the importing of food items such as rice, meat, chicken and eggs.
“We are not competing with the existing producers but just want to reduce the cost of living and ensure (food security).”
Ahmad Zahid said Felcra also has other business entities, which he will continue to monitor to further develop the agency’s business transactions.
“So far, we have 3,000ha of padi estates in Perak and have identified 12,000ha of land in Sarawak and 6,000ha in Sabah to be used for padi cultivation,” he added.
