Man arrested in Wangsa Maju for allegedly insulting Islam


KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a man in Wangsa Maju for allegedly insulting Islam.

Police secretary Deputy Comm Datuk Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin said the 40-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday (May 9) over a video clip he made about the "salam" greeting.

"Police also seized two mobile phones and three SIM cards owned by the suspect.

"The case is being investigated by the Bukit Aman CID special investigations unit for spreading words that cause disharmony, disunity, or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill will, or prejudicing, the maintenance of harmony or unity, on grounds of religion," she said in a statement on Wednesday (May 10).

She added that the case was also being investigated for misuse of networking facilities.

"The suspect has been remanded for four days to help with further investigations.

"Since the 3R (rulers/religion/race) task force was formed on March 22 this year a total of 18 investigation papers have been opened with 12 individuals arrested," she said, adding that the investigations were conducted under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act, Section 298a of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

She advised the public to not misuse social media by making statements that ridicule and cause anger, hate, disharmony and disunity as well as touch on sensitivities involving the rulers.

"Stern action will be taken using all available laws to protect peace and the best interests of the community," she said.
