JOHOR BARU: Financial compensation will be channelled to 176 homes in Kampung Melayu Majidee here that were badly damaged during a thunderstorm.

Johor Baru district officer Muzaldin Mohamed said the amount of compensation from the state government would vary according to assessments on the level of damage.

“Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has asked for repair works immediately. We will hold a townhall sessions with affected residents to explain to them about it.

“The assessment of damaged houses will be done immediately,” he said here yesterday.

Muzaldin added that the compensation would be distributed as soon as possible.

He said several agencies would be involved in channelling the aid including Yayasan Johor Baru City Council (MBJB), the Welfare Department and Johor Mentri Besar’s Office.

Earlier, Onn Hafiz visited the area to survey the damage caused by the thunderstorm, which hit Johor Baru on Wednesday.

The sudden one-hour thunderstorm brought heavy rain that led to a flash flood in Kampung Melayu Majidee here.

Houses were badly damaged with roofs blown off, while three cars were also damaged by fallen trees.

The affected areas were Jalan Rahmat, Jalan Budiman and Jalan Sehat.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that one of the affected residents, Liza Wati A. Gani, 36, said she needed the government’s help to repair her 40-year-old family home, as the roof had been blown away during the storm.

“Repairing it will cost thousands of ringgit. My sister and I live in this house, we do not have much money, we can only hope for the government’s help,” she added.
