Hong Kong singer Vivian Chow was panned for her “below-par performance” during her recent concert in the United States.

According to a report in Nanyang Siang Pau, the 55-year-old, one of the most popular female singers in her heyday in the 1990s, was seen struggling with the high notes and even going off-key at times.

Chow looked impeccable in elegant gowns and costumes at the show held at a resort in Lincoln, California, on April 26.

But judging by the videos posted by fans on social media, her performance was nothing to shout about.

Some netizens harshly commented that it was obvious the songstress could not hit the high notes with her diminishing vocal abilities.

“She is indeed still gorgeous. But it’s also true that her singing was bad,” said one of them.

> A Weibo user shared the gritty story of poor cleaners in Beijing through the “Story Hunting” segment of the social media platform, China Press reported.

The user said he followed Liu Jun and his wife back to their house next to a public toilet and discovered that many city cleaners were living that way.

“Their house measures only about 2sq m on the ground floor. The couple will have to climb up a ladder to the upper floor when they go to bed. No air-conditioner, just a fan.

“They would buy the cheapest vegetables and meat from the market and cook simple meals.”

Another city cleaner, Zhang Yuanmin, has a slightly bigger lot at about 5sq m, he added.

Zhang earns 3,900 yuan (RM2,510) while his wife, 4,000 yuan (RM2,580).

“With this income, they pretty much can’t afford anything else but food,” he said.

He noted that the Beijing municipal government had built 1,891 public toilets and converted 3,118 toilets for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.

In total, there are now 12,769 public toilets in the Chinese capital, making it the city with the most number of the facility in the world.
