KOTA BARU: Kelantan police arrested 13 local men and a woman, and seized various types of firecrackers and fireworks, worth more than RM100,000, between March 25 and April 5.
State police chief Comm Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun said the arrests and seizures involved six districts, namely Kota Baru, Pasir Mas, Tumpat, Machang, Tanah Merah and Pasir Puteh.
"During the period, a total of 15 cases of arrests and seizures of firecrackers and fireworks have been successfully carried out, involving a value of RM115,679,” he said in a statement Wednesday (April 5).
He said that all suspects were investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957, which provides for a prison sentence of up to seven years or a fine of RM10,000 or both, upon conviction.
"I would like to remind any party not to sell any firecrackers openly without first obtaining a permit from the police,” he said.
Meanwhile, in JELI, a labourer was detained with 6,000 yaba pills, in a car on the roadside of Jalan Jeli-Dabong, Kampung Lama near Kuala Balah, here on Tuesday.
Jeli OCPD Supt Saari Yaacob said that the 47-year-old local suspect was arrested by members of crime prevention patrols in the area around 11pm.
"An inspection of a sling bag carried by the suspect found 24 plastic packets, containing 6,000 yaba pills, estimated to be worth RM60,000,” he said in a statement Wednesday.
Saari said that the suspect also tested positive for methamphetamine, and was remanded for seven days, starting Wednesday, for further investigation. - Bernama
