Floods: Over 40,000 still at evacuation centres in Johor

JOHOR BARU: The flooding in Johor has yet to see major improvement, with the number of evacuees still hovering over the 40,000 mark.

As of 8am on Wednesday (March 8), a total of 40,141 evacuees from 11,468 families are seeking relief at 202 temporary flood relief centres (PPS).

This is an increase from the 39,903 evacuees from 11,404 families recorded at 4am, said the state disaster management committee.

The situation in Batu Pahat and Tangkak has deteriorated while the numbers in other districts like Muar, Segamat, Kluang, Kota Tinggi, Mersing and Pontian remain unchanged within that time frame.

The registered flood evacuees in Batu Pahat ranked highest at 27,774, followed by Muar (4,080), Tangkak (2,536), Segamat (2,034), Mersing (1,162), Kota Tinggi (1,138), Kluang (1,310) and Pontian (107).

Johor Baru and Kulai are the only two districts statewide not currently flooded.

The areas affected in Batu Pahat include Yong Peng, Sri Gading, Parit Yaani, Sri Medan and Parit Sulong.

“No bad weather alerts have been issued by the Meteorology Department for the day and the respective district disaster management committees have also reported clear skies this morning. Hopefully the situation will improve soon,” the committee added
