24 people evacuated as floods hit Sipitang village

KOTA KINABALU: Twenty-four residents from four families were evacuated from their homes in Kampung Bebangkong in Mesapol after a flood hit parts of Sabah’s southwestern Sipitang district.

Sipitang Fire and Rescue Station chief Desmond Anak Mickey said the evacuation involved four families in the village and were sent by boat to Mesapol hall at about 6am on Sunday (Nov 1).

The victims comprised five men, nine women, four boys, five girls and a baby girl, he said in a statement.

Desmond said the operation involved six firemen from Sipitang who were assisted by two police officers.

Yesterday, four cars were crushed after a tree fell on them along Jalan Fung Yei Ting in Kota Kinabalu. No one was reported hurt in the incident.

Lintas Fire and Rescue Station chief Noor Sherriyana Bohari said the department received a distress call at 8.45pm on Saturday (Oct 31) and dispatched a team of nine personnel to the scene.

She said firemen carried out cutting and clearing work to remove the fallen tree from the affected vehicles.

Heavy rains and thunderstorms have been experienced over most parts of Sabah for several days.
