ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (Maqis) Department has detained 16 pallets of animal feed weighing 16,000kg from Singapore at the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) here.
In a statement by Johor Maqis, its enforcement personnel carried out an inspection on a lorry in KSAB near the Second Link at around 3.30pm on Tuesday (Feb 14).
“Our personnel found a load of 640 sacks of animal feed with packaging of 25kg per sack, which is estimated to be worth RM326,390.
“Further checks found that the animal food was brought in without presenting a valid Maqis import permit and was detained for further action,” it said on Wednesday (Feb 15).
The department added that the 46-year-old Malaysian lorry driver has been released after having his statement recorded to help with the investigation.
The act of importing any type of agricultural produce without a Maqis import permit is an offence under Section 11(1) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011 (Act 728), which can be punished under Section 11(3) of the same Act.
It also said that Maqis was always committed to carrying out enforcement at the country’s entry points to ensure the safety of agricultural products entering Malaysia.
Maqis added this was to comply with the conditions and regulations set by the government to ensure that the country's food biosecurity is always under control.
