M’sians bugged by crashes and glitches to JPJ website

PETALING JAYA: As teething problems go, the rollout of the Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) app to display road tax and driving licences has proven to be a bug-filled first day.

Barely a day after its debut, the Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) app and website crashed and become unresponsive for many people, who complained that they couldn’t register an account despite trying many times since yesterday afternoon.

Some even said that when they tried to register an account through the app, they received a notification saying that their identity card numbers had been registered already.

“I’ve been trying since 3pm to 6pm, and I still couldn’t register a new account. But, after trying a few more times, suddenly the system said I got an account.

“I then tried to log in, but the app crashed again,” said Chelsea Lee, an editor with a news outlet.

Lee said the app continued to crash about five times and she gave up.

“I’ll try again the next day and I hope I can get through.

“I still have the road tax sticker in my car that is valid for a few more months.

“So, I’m in no hurry to find out yet,” said Lee.

Graphic designer John Tan said he managed to register an account before 12pm, and said it was probably due to fewer people flooding the registration system on the app and website.

However, Tan said he was shocked to see that a random motorbike plate was registered under his name in the app.

“I don’t own a motorbike and suddenly I own a motorbike.

“I’m afraid that someone registered their vehicles under my name.

“Next thing I did was to check my summons and luckily there were none,” added Tan.

Producer Tammy Lo said she managed to register an account through the JPJ app on Android, but couldn’t access her driving license and road tax on the app.

“The app says that the system was experiencing high traffic volumes,” said Lo, who nonetheless praised the app as a good initiative.

“Now, I don’t have to worry about misplacing my driving licence or it being stolen.”

Meanwhile, some Malaysians want Transport Minister Anthony Loke to look into the quality of the JPJ app.

“Dear YB, the site (app) definitely needs to improve in many aspects.

“(It) is slow, crashing during registration, now when I want to reset the password, the TAC (transaction authorisation code) takes forever (to be sent to email),” said a user.

“Most importantly, make sure the system servers are able to take in such volume of users, because as of now, it has kept buffering and unable to receive TAC, also there is no clear instructions or help desk to assist users,” said Facebook user Kenny Kaz.

In a statement yesterday, Loke said that an in-house pilot project is underway to begin the use of digital display of road taxes and driving licences.

Both digital versions of driving licences and road taxes can be applied through the JPJ website at http://public.jpj.gov.my or MyJPJ app from yesterday onwards.

With the digital road tax, Loke said vehicle owners can do away with the display of the hard copy.
