Large crowds throng island to celebrate double joy

GEORGE TOWN: The dreaded but expected traffic congestion has hit the city, with several major roads choked with vehicles bearing out-of-state number plates during the twin Thaipusam and Chap Goh Meh celebrations.

Traffic bottlenecks were reported at a few roads here over the weekend, especially those leading to popular Thaipusam celebration sites.

There was also heavy traffic in the city, notably along Penang Road, Transfer Road and the Esplanade as local tourists took advantage of the three-day holiday to visit popular nasi kandar outlets and other tourist attractions.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said despite the higher than usual vehicle numbers reported on the roads, the situation remained under control with no major problems.

“The traffic situation is manageable and under control,” he reassured reporters after visiting refreshment stalls along Jalan Brown yesterday.

With several roads closed before the golden and silver chariots make their return journey to their respective temples today, Comm Mohd Shuhaily reminded motorists to remain vigilant and park their vehicles at designated spots.

“Do not park your cars haphazardly, especially near tourist attractions, as this can lead to traffic congestion,” he said.

The golden chariot will leave the Arulmigu Sree Balathandayu-thapani Waterfall Hilltop Temple at 6pm while the silver chariot is expected to leave the Nattukotai Chettiar Temple an hour later today.
