KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu will be asking the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to unfreeze its bank accounts on Thursday (Feb 2), said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The Perikatan Nasional chairman also said MACC was aware of the funds in Bersatu’s accounts and he is confident that the party has proper financial records.
“It (the funds) is also from legitimate sources.
“Therefore, we will send a letter today (Feb 2) to the MACC to request for the freeze on Bersatu’s accounts to be cancelled,” said Muhyiddin in a press conference on Thursday (Feb 2).
Muhyiddin said that the freeze on Bersatu’s account is affecting party operations.
“If they want to freeze our accounts for three months, it will be hard. My officers will have no salaries, offices cannot be maintained and rent cannot be paid.
“It will affect party administration and also our role as an important party in the country,” said Muhyiddin.
Muhyiddin said that after the MACC has investigated Bersatu’s accounts and no wrongdoing is found, the anti-graft agency has to unfreeze the party’s accounts.
“More importantly, so that Bersatu’s administration can flow smoothly, which includes the payment of salaries and all of our financial commitments can be met.
“Bersatu also needs funds to campaign during state elections, which will be held soon,” said Muhyiddin.
Muhyiddin also hopes that the freeze on Bersatu’s accounts is not a ploy by the unity government to disrupt Perikatan’s election machinery in the looming state polls.
“If this step is taken, it will affect our efforts in election activities as well as assistance to our friends in Perikatan,” said Muhyiddin.
Muhyiddin also said he was confident that the MACC is conducting professional and transparent investigations.
“I guarantee that Bersatu will fully cooperate with the MACC in its investigations,” added Muhyiddin.
Bersatu is currently being investigated under the Money Laundering Act and the MACC Act 2009.
According to MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, two of Bersatu’s accounts were frozen a fortnight ago.
Azam had said that the probe into Bersatu’s accounts isn’t linked to the alleged abuse of Covid-19 funds.
