Royals and PM to join in Tambun CNY revelry

IPOH: Known for its juicy pomelos, Tambun will be abuzz during the state-level Chinese New Year celebration to be held at the water theme park. Some 50,000 people are expected at the event, with Perak Ruler Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah and Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim also expected to attend.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is Tambun MP, will also be present.

The event is scheduled to start at 2pm next Sunday at the Lost World of Tambun.

State Tourism Committee chairman Loh Sze Yee said the location was chosen in conjunction with Visit Ipoh Year 2023.

“During the open house, visitors will be able to enter the theme park for free to experience the activities offered,” he added.

Tambun Pomelo Growers Association adviser Tan Swee Kong said it was great that the area had been chosen for the event.

He said although it was not the right time to raise such matters, he hoped the land issues plaguing the farmers would be resolved.

He said most of them had been toiling the land for more than 50 years, taking over from their fathers.

A check at the famous tourist attraction areas at the Old Town saw tourists packing the spots.

Among the attractions here is the famous Panglima Lane, popularly known as Concubine Lane, where local delights, trinket stalls, decorative antiques and souvenirs are sold at quaint little shops.

However, most coffeeshops at the area were closed due to the reunion dinner.

Trader CM Beh, 70, said it was normal for many shops at the Old Town area to be closed on the eve of Chinese New Year.

“Most of the people here right now are visitors from outstation,” she said.
