Umno to hold EGM to amend party constitution, says Ahmad Maslan

KUALA LUMPUR: A extraordinary general meeting (EGM) will be held during the upcoming Umno general assembly to discuss the amendment of two clauses in the party's constitution, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

The Umno secretary-general said the EGM would be held after the presidential policy speech next Friday (Jan 13).

"There are two Umno constitutional clauses that we will amend; first, that all information chiefs will automatically be appointed representatives to the Umno general assembly every year, which is an amendment under Clause 8.4," he told reporters on Tuesday (Jan 3).

The second amendment, to Clause 20.11, would see Umno members having their membership revoked if they left the party after becoming an assemblyman or MP, or if they contested for any other party or as an independent in an election.

The general assembly, which was postponed from last year, will commence next week from Jan 11 to 14 involving a total of 5,523 representatives.

Ahmad also said the assembly would only focus on one motion on party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s policy speech.

In comparison to previous assemblies, he said delegates would usually address pressing issues which involved the economy, education and religion, among others.

"Previously, the majority of the Cabinet consisted of our party members so we could address the issues.

"However, as we are in a unity government, some relevant ministries' positions are not held by us so we cannot address issues such as cost of living," he said.

He added that the motions on these issues would not be discussed due to the time constraints during the general assembly.
