Floods: Number of victims in Johor increase to 159

JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor increased with 159 individuals seeking shelter at five temporary relief centres.

In a statement, Johor Civil Defence Force (APM) said as of 6pm on Wednesday (Dec 14), Kota Tinggi remained the worst hit district with 88 flood victims from 27 families.

“Some 62 individuals from Taman Desaru Utama in Bandar Penawar have been moved to Dewan Muafakat Bandar Penawar, while 26 villagers from Kampung Baru Sungai Mas are seeking shelter at Dewan Kampung Baru Sungai Mas.

“In Segamat, some 71 villagers from Kampung Seberang Batu Badak, Kampung Batu 5 and Kampung Kuala Paya are seeking shelter at Balai Raya Kampung Batu Badak, Balairaya Kampung Kuala Paya and Dewan Komuniti Kampung Tasek,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Hussin Zamora said continued rainfalls since 11pm on Tuesday (Dec 13) night have caused the flood to hit several areas in the district.

He added that a house in Felda Adela was hit with floods where it reached waist level and the house owner and his family members could not get out in time.

“Firemen from Sebana Fire and Rescue station rescued the four victims, where they are currently being placed at Dewan Sukan Kampung Muhibbah,” he said.

Supt Hussin reminded the public, especially those living in low lying and high-risk flood areas, to stay vigilant where they must always be prepared to move out when instructed by government agencies.
