KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman has opened an investigation into Baling MP Hassan Saad for allegedly calling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim an "agent of Israel".
Police secretary Deputy Comm Datuk Norsiah Mohd Saaduddin confirmed that a police report has been lodged against Hassan.
"The investigation will be carried out by the Bukit Aman CID Special Investigations Unit.
"We have classified the case under Section 504 and Section 500 of the Penal Code for intentionally insulting and provoking any person knowing it to be likely that such provocation will cause them to break the public peace and defamation," she said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 29).
She added that they would also be investigating the case for misuse of networking facilities.
Earlier, Putrajaya PKR youth lodged a police report urging the police to investigate the malicious claims that Anwar was an Israeli agent.
Its leader Ezam Saidi, who lodged the police report, said that his party had identified two individuals responsible for spreading the matter and described it as malicious intent against the Prime Minister.
"We came forward to lodge a report for the defamation of the Prime Minister.
"We all know that the process of appointing the Prime Minister took place last week so smoothly after it was consented by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah through a special meeting of the Council of Rulers for the appointment of the Prime Minister in order to form the Federal Government right away.
"Unfortunately, we saw as soon as Anwar's appointment was completed, the accusations and slander started and continued by playing on racial and religious sentiments to the point of accusing him of being a supposed Israeli agent," he told reporters after lodging the police report at the Section 7 Police Station at Putrajaya on Tuesday.
Ezam added that the matter should not be taken lightly because it involved sovereignty and national security.
