Tattoo convention in Sabah to showcase Borneo's traditional arts and culture

KOTA KINABALU: A tattoo event highlighting Borneo's traditional arts and culture with 100 local and international tattoo artists in attendance will take place from Friday (Nov 25) to Sunday (Nov 27).

It will be held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) and is organised by Limuel Estrop from Orangutan Tattoo Studio, who practises the traditional method of hand-poked tattooing.

In a statement released by the event management on Wednesday (Nov 23), the convention will be held with traditional roots in mind and a theme of "Don't just wear your tribe, ink it".

"Sabahans take huge pride in their arts and culture and such events are a gateway for outsiders to gain a deeper understanding towards its rich and unique culture," it added.

It also said that a march from downtown Gaya Street to the SICC by the Gabungan Orang Asal Sabah & Sarawak (GOASS) delegates is also expected as one of the event's sidelines to signify the event's traditional aspect.

The event management then said that attendees may witness different forms of traditional arts such as dance performances with traditional instruments, local arts and workshops from local artisans as well as sample local food.

It also said that tattoo artists from the United Kingdom, United States, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia and Singapore are also expected to participate.
