KUCHING: It is not about wanting to create history by becoming the first-ever Dayak woman as MP; rather it is about serving the people, says Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) women chief Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie (pic).
She was elected as Malaysia’s first Dayak woman parliamentarian after she won in Sri Aman convincingly on Saturday.
“The prime reason for me contesting in Sri Aman would be to ensure that I could maintain the well-being of the people there.
“It has always been about wanting to serve them and working alongside with the current assemblymen and assemblywomen of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS),” she said.
She said she hoped to bring about further development to Sri Aman in tandem with Sarawak’s 2030 vision.
“Equipped with my 36 years of exposure in the political arena since 1986, I am confident that I can serve the people well to the best of my ability,” she said.
To her Dayak community, Doris said: “Syabas, we have made a breakthrough!”
She added that the people of Sri Aman had also proved that gender was no longer an issue for one to be able to lead.
Additionally, she said the willingness of the authorities to create an opportunity for women to participate in the forefront, especially in politics, was a great step forward.
“The Dayak here must have a new mindset. Let us rise above gender issues and instead strive forward as one for the betterment and progression of the Dayak community,” she said.
