Candidates should test themselves for Covid-19, says MMA

PETALING JAYA: Candidates should take a Covid-19 self-test and wear a mask when meeting people, says the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA).

MMA president Dr Muruga Raj said all nominated GE15 candidates should make it a point to self-test and ensure they wear masks when meeting the public during the two-week campaigning period.

“The country may be transitioning to endemicity but Covid-19 is still around and there is still a need to protect the vulnerable.

“Older people and those with comorbidities can still be at risk of severe infection and hospitalisation.

“So the right thing to do would be to take the necessary precautions,” he said in a statement.

It was reported that Malaysia is currently experiencing a small wave of Covid-19 cases following the discovery of the Omicron XBB sub-variant in the country.

Dr Muruga said although not compulsory, the use of masks is highly recommended at this time when many gatherings would be taking place across the country for GE15.

“I don’t think any candidate will want to risk contracting the virus at this time and be left with no option but to cut short their campaigning.

“To avoid this, it would be wise to take precautions,” he said.
