Najib not given special treatment in jail, says Prisons Dept

KAJANG: Former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak is not accorded special treatment in Kajang Prison, says the Prisons Department.

Commissioner-general Datuk Nordin Muhamad said department personnel must follow standard operating procedures (SOP) in dealing with inmates.

"We give the same treatment to every inmate and there is no question of bias.

"He (Najib) is undergoing his prison sentence and has to adhere to the Prisons Act 1995," he told reporters after the launch of the amended Offenders Compulsory Attendance Act 2022 at the department headquarters on Tuesday (Oct 11).

Nordin said stern action would be taken against any personnel who gave special treatment to any inmate.

"We have to respect the rule of law. Prison officers have no power to give special treatment.

"We are entrusted to enforce the law," he said.

Asked whether Najib or his lawyers had applied to change prisons, Nordin said the department had not received any such request.

On Aug 23, the Federal Court upheld Najib's conviction in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.
