PETALING JAYA: In 1987, a group of Malaysian engineers embarked on an experiment to find out solutions to the problem of road embankment settlements when built on soft soils.
Through collaboration with the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), the engineers chose a trial spot next to the North South Expressway (NSE) at Muar, Johor – characterised by a uniform deposit of soft soils – that they named as Muar Marine Clay.
