The syabu shame continues

KUALA LUMPUR: Syabu continues to be the drug of choice among users in the city and also the one most seized by the cops.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said 108.53kg of syabu valued at RM10.85mil was among RM16.89mil worth of seized drugs that were recently disposed of.

“We believe syabu is the most popular drug among the young, especially in entertainment outlets.

“We are constantly monitoring the situation and consistently conducting operations to curb the drug menace,” he told reporters after attending the ceremony to dispose of seized drugs and drug-making equipment here yesterday.

Comm Azmi said other drugs to be disposed of were 66.3kg of cannabis worth RM3.31mil, 14.28kg of ketamine (RM2.14mil), 27.3kg of methylenedioxymethamphetamine or MDMA (RM409,000), 117.3 litres of ketum water (RM11,000) as well as other chemicals and ingredients to produce drugs.

“The seized drugs are from cases in which court proceedings have concluded,” he added.

Comm Azmi said the drugs seized could have supplied 450,000 users.

Meanwhile, police secretary Deputy Comm Datuk Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin said 16,163 summonses were issued to motorists running red lights during a nationwide operation last month.

She said most of the summonses were issued to users of motorcycles at 8,211, followed by cars (6,083), lorries (528), vans (264), buses (22), and other vehicles (1,055).

She said that 24,276 summonses were also issued for other traffic offences while 71,069 vehicles were inspected, adding that 27 people were detained under the Road Transport Act 1987 or Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for having outstanding summonses and warrants of arrest.
