Duo nabbed with RM1.5mil syabu disguised as tea

SEREMBAN: Police have arrested two childhood friends and seized some 30kg of drugs believed to be methamphetamine during an operation at KM236.9 of the North-South Expressway near Pedas.

State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the two suspects, who are in their 30s and from the same village in Batu Pahat, Johor, were arrested around 3pm while they were travelling in a car and heading south on Feb 12.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects picked up the drugs, or syabu, worth some RM1.5mil from Puchong, meant for the southern market.

“The drugs were packed in 1kg packages and declared as Chinese tea,” he told reporters at the state police contingent headquarters.

The drugs were found in the boot of the car, which had been rented.

DCP Alzafny said the suspects – a mechanic and a fisherman – were believed to be members of a syndicate that had been active since last year.

He said checks revealed the driver had three previous records, including two that were narcotics-related, while the other had five, with four of them being drug-related.

“Urine tests returned positive for meth abuse,” he said, adding that both suspects would remain in remand until Feb 23.

He said the police were also investigating the origins of the drugs and the identities of any other members involved.

DCP Alzafny said the police would continue with efforts to combat drug trafficking activities.
