Zahid: Efforts to rekindle Muafakat Nasional must be based on original pact with PAS

PETALING JAYA: Any efforts to rekindle Muafakat Nasional must be based on the charter originally agreed on by both Umno and PAS, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Umno president said anything regarding Muafakat’s progress should also be based on official statements.

“We (Umno) have never discounted the importance of Muafakat in ensuring the political stability of the country.

“We, however, reject working with traitors and those who continue singling out Barisan Nasional as the main enemy,” he said in a statement late Sunday (Oct 2).

Muafakat Nasional is a loose cooperation between Umno and PAS formed after the last general election to strengthen unity among Malay and Muslim political parties.

The Bagan Datuk MP also confirmed receiving a visit from PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang at his residence on Sept 17.

“The meeting went on smoothly in accordance with the Islamic spirit of unity.

“We discussed many things, including the Malay-Muslim unity, which we once worked on together.

“This unity is also key to ensuring a multiracial country like Malaysia will prosper,” he said.

Earlier on Sunday, Ahmad Zahid said Umno posed three conditions to PAS if it wanted to cooperate with them for the 15th General Election (GE15).

This includes PAS leaving Perikatan Nasional and severing ties with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.

"He (Abdul Hadi) is aware of the conditions and we only can start talking about working together if these are met," he said.

He added that no official or high-level meetings were held to discuss collaborating during GE15.
