Pupil cooks up ‘kidnap attempt’

IPOH: A nine-year-old girl, who had apparently seen social media posts on kidnap-for-organs rackets, concocted a story about a kidnap attempt on her, says Comm Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.

“She made up the story so that police would take action,” said the Perak police chief.

“The child was influenced by social media posts and videos about organ theft,” he told a press conference yesterday.

He said a special task force, which was set up to investigate the girl’s claim, found that the alleged kidnapping attempt did not take place.

“We have spoken to five people, including the pupil’s classmates and friends, security guards, and a van driver. There was no attempted kidnapping,” he said.

Last Friday, the father of the girl uploaded a post on Facebook about the alleged incident that was said to have occurred outside a school here.

The girl was said to have managed to escape her would-be kidnappers and told her mother about it, who later lodged a police report that very night.

Asked about a video of a van, believed to be linked to the case, that had surfaced on social media, Comm Mohd Yusri said it was unrelated.

“The van was just carrying some workers,” he said.
