Seeking investors willing to share transfer of technology

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is continuously upgrading its transport infrastructure to attract more foreign investors who can enter the local market and enable technology transfer, says the Transport Minister.

Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said this while participating in a virtual meeting of a roundtable dialogue between the Malaysian government and chief executive officers from China yesterday.

Held concurrently in Nanning, China, the theme of the dialogue was “Deepening China-Malaysia Economic and Trade Cooperation for Win-Win Development”.

“I shared with the participants the various ongoing projects that are currently taking place to build land bridges that improve connectivity, including the Pan-Borneo Highway, Gemas-Johor Baru Electrified Double Track project, Klang Valley Double Tracking project and East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) as well as the LRT3, MRT2 and MRT3 projects.

“With the reopening of international borders and economic sectors, we encourage foreign players to form joint ventures with local companies that allow technology transfer,” said Dr Wee in a Facebook post.

He said he informed the participants that the Kuantan Port Authority was expecting joint ventures with Chinese companies to use the Kuantan Port as their main trade route, especially when the ECRL project starts operating in 2027.

“From Kuantan Port, all cargo can be taken to the rest of Peninsular Malaysia by train.

“Transshipment cargo can also be sent to other ports in Malaysia using trains before continuing the journey by ship to the destination countries,” said Dr Wee.

The other participants of the dialogue were Malaysian ambassador to the People’s Republic of China Raja Datuk Nushirwan Zainal Abidin, governor of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Lan Tianli, vice-chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Zhang Shao-gang and Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Lim Ban Hong.
