Indian student wins chess competition

AN Indian student from SMK Jitra has won the national-level schools chess competition, Makkal Osai reported.

Darshan Revinthran, 15, emerged as the winner in the under-15 boys category in the competition hosted by the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) in Kota Kinabalu.

He recorded four wins and two draws against opponents from Sabah, Selangor, Perak, Pahang and Penang.

Darshan said it has always been a dream for him to take part in international chess competitions.

A total of 294 students from 16 schools took part in the competition which was held for five days from Sept 3 at Universiti Malaysia Sabah in Kota Kinabalu.

Thayalini’s first book, a collection of poems titled “Iyarkayin Parisugal” (Nature’s Gifts) was launched by MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan during an event organised by the Tapah Tamil Writers and Readers Cultural Association in Tapah.

In his speech, Saravanan, who is Human Resources Minister, commended the young poet who gained interest in literature and poetry through visits to the local library.

Association president Rameswari Raja said the association would help young aspiring writers to develop their talent.

He added the association decided to publish Thayalini’s work as an encouragement to her and others.

Thayalini also received a personal contribution of RM5,000 from Saravanan.
