Elderly man jailed 10 years for outraging teen’s modesty

MELAKA: An elderly man was sentenced to 10 years in jail by the Session Courts here for outraging the modesty of a teenager.

The 72-year-old, who pleaded guilty during the proceedings on Friday (Sept 2), was also ordered to be whipped by judge Mohd Sabri Ismail.

The man was accused of outraging the modesty of the 15-year-old girl inside a car at Taman Krubong Jaya, here on Aug 29, between 10am and 3pm.

He faced the sentence under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children 2017, which carries a jail term up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction.

Based on the statement of facts, the accused had befriended the teenager, who is his former neighbour, and often presented her gifts including a smartphone to entice her in meeting him following the death of his wife, two years ago.

The teenager's elder brother suspected something amiss when his sister often met up with the accused and spotted the teenager with him on Aug 29 inside a car.

The brother then tried to confront the accused when the latter attempted to mow him down before police arrived, and arrested the elderly man.

The accused also faced another charge for raping the teenager at the same court.

He claimed trial to the offence under Section 376(2) of the Penal Code which carries a maximum 30 years’ jail and whipping upon conviction.

He allegedly committed the second offence at 3.30pm, sometime in the middle of last month at Taman Krubong Jaya, here.

The court fixed Sept 28 as the re-mention date to allow the accused to appoint a counsel.

Separately, on Friday (Sept 2), the accused was also fined RM1,800 by the Magistrate’s Court for causing injury to the teenager’s brother under Section 323 of the Penal Code.
