Forty-six people with storm-damaged homes at relief centres in Johor


A total of 46 victims whose homes were damaged by strong winds on Friday (Aug 12) afternoon are seeking shelter at the temporary relief centre set up in Dewan Taman Johor Jaya.

JOHOR BARU: A total of 46 victims whose homes were damaged by strong winds on Friday (Aug 12) are seeking shelter at a relief centre set up in Dewan Taman Johor Jaya.

The centre began operating at 5.30pm Friday to provide relief to victims from 11 families, including 21 children and infants, according to the Johor Baru district disaster management committee.

"Those affected are residents of Flat Ros Merah in Taman Johor Jaya, where roofs were blown away by strong winds at around 1.30pm," they said in a statement.

Roofs were blown off six blocks of flats and destroyed cars parked below.

Besides Flat Ros Merah, Jalan Ros Merah 3/1, Jalan Bakawali 39 in Taman Johor Jaya areas such as Kampung Melayu Pandan, Bandar Seri Alam and Kota Puteri in Masai were also affected where trees were uprooted and electrical poles toppled over.

Earlier, Johor housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor urged the victims to head to the temporary relief centres instead of staying put to avoid untoward incidents from happening.
