Visitors throng Penang Hill festival after two-year hiatus

GEORGE TOWN: After a two-year hiatus, the Penang Hill Festival (PHF) makes a timely return with a myriad of fun events.

Among the programmes during the three-day festival, which started on Friday, are a walk along special trails, a talk on the history of Penang Hill, musical performances and a night exploration.

A. Susila, 45, who was there with her family, said she heard about the festival from a friend who works on the hilltop.

“We never think of visiting on the weekends as we know it will be crowded, but this festival seems special. We really enjoyed the programmes,” said the engineer yesterday.

The festival will continue today with programmes to provide visitors with an insight into the uniqueness and history of the hill.

Highlights include sunrise yoga, a talk and walk along the Viaduct trail, bird watching, the Ginger Garden tour, nature and heritage walk, a Zumba session, a photo exhibition, a music on the hill “East meets West” show and the night exploration.

First held in 2018, the festival is conducted to promote and raise awareness of Penang Hill’s nature, history and cultural heritage.

This PHF holds a special meaning as it is being held after the movement control order was lifted and when Penang Hill has been accorded the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve under the Unesco Man and the Biosphere Programme.
