Covid-19 Watch: 4,413 new cases, nationwide ICU bed usage at 63.5pc


PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded 4,413 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday (Aug 4), bringing the total number of cases in the country to 4,697,213 infections since the pandemic began.

The Health Ministry's CovidNow portal reported that 4,407 of Thursday's new Covid-19 cases were local transmissions while six imported infections were logged.

There were 3,394 recoveries on Thursday. This brings the cumulative number of recoveries in Malaysia to 4,613,676 since the pandemic began.

The portal also reported that there were 47,534 active cases currently in the country, with 45,928, or 96.6%, observing home quarantine and 23 individuals admitted to low-risk quarantine and treatment centres.

The CovidNow portal reported that 1,583 patients, or 3.33% of the total, were currently admitted to hospital for treatment. The number of Covid-19 patients warded at intensive care units (ICU) throughout the country stands at 52, with 32 of these patients requiring ventilation support.

The ICU utilisation rate nationwide stood at 63.5%, with 10 states or localities recording ICU usage rates of more than 60%.

Johor had the highest ICU utilisation rate at 77.7%, followed by Selangor (74.5%), Kedah (73.1%), Kuala Lumpur (71.7%), Labuan (71.4%), Kelantan (70.3%), Putrajaya (65%), Sabah (63.8%), Negri Sembilan (63.3%) and Perak (61.4%).

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry's GitHub data repository reported that eight Covid-19 deaths were reported on Thursday with four classified as Brought in Dead (BID).

This brings the death toll to 36,003.
