Penang cops record statements from eight people over flash mob protest


BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have recorded statements from eight people in connection with a flash mob protest at the Seberang Jaya roundabout on Friday (June 24).

Penang police chief Comm Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the eight, including the organiser of the protest, have cooperated with the authorities to help in the investigations.

"We are in the midst of tracking down the remaining individuals who took part in the flash mob protest to urge the government to lower the price of goods," he said.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said a report was received about the incident, and further investigation found that the protest was conducted with a permit from police.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said the investigation paper will be referred to the state prosecutor’s office after the investigation is completed.

He said the protest took place at 5pm and was attended by 30 participants.

He said a total of 13 placards and a poster were erected during the incident, adding that the protest took place peacefully without any untoward incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
