Father, son remanded for killing cat

MELAKA: A 62-year-old man and his son were detained for allegedly shooting and killing a neighbour’s cat with an air rifle at a house in Bukit Rambai here.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the older suspect was detained at his home yesterday while his 27-year-old son was nabbed on Monday.

“Based on our preliminary investigation, the father and son claimed that they were annoyed after the cat had frequently entered their home and decided to shoot it,” he said.

ACP Christopher said the 44-year-old neighbour brought his injured cat to an animal clinic on Monday. The veterinarian there confirmed the cause of death was caused by pellets embedded in the feline.

The neighbour then decided to lodge a police report against the neighbour for animal cruelty, he added.

ACP Christopher said the police raided the suspect’s house yesterday and confiscated the air rifle and 17 pellets as well as other spare parts used to assemble an air gun.

The two suspects have been remanded for four days to assist in the investigation under Section 36 of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 30 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015.
