Cops seize 840kg ganja worth RM2.1mil in Penang


GEORGE TOWN: Some 840kg of ganja worth RM2.12mil have been seized in an operation in Penang that saw eight people arrested.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the suspects, including two Thai nationals. were aged between 35 and 59.

They were detained at two separate locations at Sungai Bakap and Simpang Ampat during a joint operation conducted by Bukit Aman and state NCID from 10.50pm on June 10 and 1am on June 11.

"During the raids, police confiscated 848 slabs of ganja weighing about 840kg worth RM2.12mil," he told a press conference at state police headquarters here on Monday (June 13).

The drugs seized could have been supplied to 1,680,168 addicts, he said.

Comm Ayob Khan added that the syndicate is believed to have been in operation since the end of last year.

He said police believe the syndicate smuggled the drugs from southern Thailand through sea routes and the drugs were meant for local distribution.
