Heavy but smooth-flowing traffic in Penang for long weekend

GEORGE TOWN: Traffic was reported to be smooth and under control on major roads and highways in Penang for the long weekend.

Observation by The Star at the North-South Expressway near Seberang Jaya and Juru found that although many vehicles were on the road heading both ways, there was no congestion at around midday on Sunday (May 15).

However, PLUS' Twitter feed reported an accident at 12.21pm at KM7.4 of the Penang Bridge Prai-bound, causing a traffic snarl that lasted about an hour.

On the island, major roads in George Town especially Penang Road, Transfer Road and Esplanade were packed with vehicles especially at the popular eating spots and attractions.

State Traffic and Public Order Department chief Supt Zafri Zolkapli said there were many vehicles in the city but the situation was manageable.

"So far the traffic is under control," he said.

Supt Zafri said as of 2pm there had been no significant increase of vehicles in the state.

He advised motorists to be courteous and follow traffic rules at all times to avoid mishaps.
