PETALING JAYA: Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes continues to terrorise Super League defences with a brace as Selangor beat Penang 3-1 at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Saturday (Oct 17).
The 25-year-old's double lifted him to the top of the scorers' chart with nine goals from six matches.
Moraes opened the scoring in the 11th minute, pouncing on a loose save by Penang goalkeeper Ramadhan Abd Hamid, who failed to hold a header from winger A. Selvan off a cross by Brazilian playmaker Victor Pernambuco.
He added his second in the 51st minute, finishing off a superb corner from wingback Quentin Cheng.
Penang pulled one back in the 68th minute with their first shot on target, when captain and defensive midfielder Stefano Brundo converted a cross from Serbian midfielder Dejan Tebas.
In injury time, the Red Giants were awarded a penalty after Penang centre-back Khairul Akmal Rokisham fouled winger Alif Izwan Yuslan.
Moraes' spot-kick hit the bar, but wingback Ahmad Zikri Khalili reacted fastest to put away the rebound and seal the win.
Selangor are second in the standings with 15 points from five matches, while Penang are 11th with four points from five games.
In the other night fixture, Melaka claimed their second win of the season, edging Kuala Lumpur 3-2 at the Hang Jebat Stadium.
The visitors went ahead in the 12th minute when Afghanistan international striker Fareed Sadat finished off a cross from midfielder Gary Steven Robbat.
Melaka levelled through Brazilian striker Christian Souza in the 41st minute, then went ahead in the 53rd when Liberian striker Kpah Sherman scored.
Kuala Lumpur equalised in the 76th minute when Melaka midfielder Syahir Rashid inadvertently deflected a corner from Paulo Josue into his own net.
Melaka restored their lead in the 85th minute through a quick counter-attack, finished off by substitute wingback V. Ruventhiran. It was his first goal in five years, his last coming for Petaling Jaya City in 2021.
Melaka are now sixth in the league with six points from five matches, while Kuala Lumpur are seventh, also with six points but separated by goal difference.
