Micromobility issue being twisted by some, says MCA man

KUALA LUMPUR: Micromobility vehicles are only restricted from being used on roads, MCA spokesman Mike Chong has reiterated.

He said an exception was given for persons with disabilities (OKU) using electric or manual personal mobility aids (PMAs) to cross roads using their vehicles.

“Although the Transport Ministry has already issued clear guidelines on the usage and restrictions on specific micromobility vehicles, there are still parties that are twisting the facts on this.

“These parties are instead saying the government is oppressing the people by preventing their usage,” he added.

Chong said the restrictions on certain micromobility vehicles being on the road were for the safety of their users and other road users.

“The main concern previously was on the use of PMAs by the disabled to commute, but this has already been discussed between the relevant stakeholders and non-governmental organisations,” he said.

Chong added that those who currently had micromobility vehicles could still use them in approved locations.

“These locations will be determined by local councils and the Housing and Local Government Ministry, whereby a set of guidelines will be released as soon as possible,” he said.

Chong also challenged Teluk Intan MP Nga Kor Ming to debate on the use of micromobility vehicles, in response to claims by Nga that these restrictions would burden users.

“I will be sending a debate invitation letter to his office at Teluk Intan in the next two days.

“Let us debate and see how the public reacts to his stance,” he added.

When contacted, Nga said he would instead debate with Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

“He (Chong) should meet and listen to the many poor people who have been affected by this policy by the Transport Minister.

“Similarly, I will debate with Dr Wee instead,” he added.

On April 26, the Transport Minister said the use of certain micromobility vehicles on the roads was prohibited effective immediately.

Dr Wee had explained that the prohibition involved mopeds and personal mobility devices, including electric scooters, devices with internal combustion engines, or those propelled by human power.
