GEORGE TOWN: Matching in blue, a local lawmaker shared the news that she has married her French beau in a civil ceremony.

Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto shared in a post on social media that she was engaged and then followed by a post a day later with a photo of the couple dressed in traditional attire at the National Registration Department in Putrajaya.

Kasthuri, 43, shared that she had the most eventful two days, referring to May 4 (her engagement) and May 6 (her registration).

"From being engaged to getting legally married in Putrajaya," she said.

In the post she called Alain Morvan her soulmate, partner in crime, confidante and support system.

Well-wishers congratulated Kasthuri with many wishing the couple a happy married life and sending them blessings.

She earlier on Friday (May 6) shared a photo of her and Morvan saying she had accepted his marriage proposal.

"He asked and I said yes," she said.

On May 6, in a ceremony attended by about 30 people, the couple professed their vows before a registrar at 11am, witnessed by her mother, Mary Patto, 73, sister Shaalini, 41, and other family members.

Also present were DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh and France ambassador to Malaysia, Roland Galharague.

A church wedding slated for late this year.

Speaking to a news portal, Kasthuri said she first met Morvan, 51, at the European Parliament in Belgium in February 2019 during an anti-death penalty congress.

They met often then and realised they had similar values, realising they had a strong connection.

Kasthuri said Morvan was an anti-death penalty advocate, besides being a journalists’ rights activist after being a former reporter for 25 years.

She said Morvan was producing a documentary on criminals who were mentally challenged in France.

She said Morvan had been visiting her regularly and she had also gone to France when possible.

"At one point, we did not meet for more than a year at the height of the pandemic," she said.
