PETALING JAYA: Umno members who still entertain the notion of working with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) have been urged to consider its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's recent actions.
Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi claimed Muhyiddin's recent meeting with Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had exposed his true intention – to become prime minister again.
"(Muhyiddin) reportedly intended to return as prime minister and (wanted to) cooperate with Pejuang.
"We thought they stand on ideology (but) apparently it's for personal gain," he said in a Facebook post on Monday (April 4).
"The Bersatu president was also reported to have met with the PKR president (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) recently. However, there were no further details.
"So is Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, who admitted he was contacted by Bersatu, possibly cooperating in the coming general election?
"However, Shafie was reported to have (rejected) the request after his (Muhyiddin's) betrayal of Pakatan Harapan.
"To (anyone) in Umno who still wishes to cooperate, believe in and defend Bersatu, they have to judge for themselves all the actions of (Muhyiddin) who is desperate to return as prime minister.
"Do we want to work with such a person?"
Ahmad Zahid’s post came after numerous media reports that Muhyiddin had met several political leaders in private, including Dr Mahathir, who later said he would not work with him.
Anwar had also said he met Muhyiddin but said it was just "a normal meeting".
Ahmad Zahid added that while Umno was not perfect, it was not desperate to do anything to be in power.
"We are not desperate, selling our principles and willing to do anything to atone for shame and seize power," he said.
