SHAH ALAM: Some 1.33 tonnes of ganja worth RM3.33mil have been seized following raids in Subang Jaya, Rawang and Semenyih, says Comm Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.
The Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director said four men aged between 23 and 46 were detained in the raids, conducted between 4.40pm and 11pm on March 24.
"One of the suspects is a businessman, another a dispatch rider and two others are jobless.
"We believe the syndicate got its ganja supply from the Golden Triangle through Thailand," he told a press conference at Selangor police headquarters on Sunday (March 27).
Those detained have been remanded until March 31, he added.
"We also seized four vehicles and cash amounting to RM331,900," he said, adding that the smuggled drugs were meant for the Selangor and Johor markets.
"We believe they have been operating since January.
"The drugs were smuggled via a land route and secret passages in the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia," he said.
According to Comm Ayob Khan, there has been an increase of ganja smuggled from overseas lately.
"The ganja cannot be kept long as its quality would deteriorate.
"The ganja seized in the operation is grade 2," he added.
Further investigations will be conducted to round up the remnants of the syndicate, he said.
"We expect to get the full scope of the (syndicate's operations) within a week."
Comm Ayob Khan said the police appreciated the cooperation of the public in relaying information on drug-related crimes.
"We urge those with information to contact the NCID hotline at 012-2087222," he added.
Meanwhile, on a separate matter involving nine enforcement agency personnel and a fisherman detained for drug trafficking earlier this month, Comm Ayob Khan said one enforcement officer and the fisherman have been charged in court.
"Eight other enforcement personnel have been detained under Section 3(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 Special Preventive Measures.
"We will complete the case file and submit it to the Home Ministry, and the ministry's inquiry officer will review our investigation.
"We will wait for the ministry's decision. The suspects will either be placed under further detention, restrictions or freed," he said.
