Allow night spots to operate, govt urged

KUALA LUMPUR: Entertainment centres, including nightclubs, should be allowed to operate with the necessary precautions in place, says a trade group coalition.

Expressing its dismay, Industries Unite said nightclubs were still not allowed to reopen despite the government’s decision to transition into Covid-19 endemicity on April 1.

“We are grateful and happy that Malaysian businesses are able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“Now that borders are opening and the standard operating procedures (SOP) are loosening up, we are heading towards an endemic environment.

“We, however, seek clarification from the relevant authorities as to why entertainment centres are still not allowed to open,” it said in a statement.

Last week, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin had said that nightclubs were still considered high-risk for Covid-19 transmission and would be the only type of business premises remaining in the country’s “negative list” from April 1.

It said these premises, which had been closed for the longest period of time, operated a kitchen and served food as well.

“Such entertainment centres are contributing to the employment market of the country and are considered tourist spots on maps and mobile apps. These premises can contribute to the country’s economy and recovery of the market,” said the coalition.

The nightclubs, it said, should be allowed to operate according to legislation and licence boundaries.

“Entertainment centres will adhere to social distancing and not operate their dance floors,” it said.
