Telecommunication firms’ service performance under review

KLUANG: Telecommunication companies operating in Malaysia must upgrade their network system to ensure good quality connectivity service at all times, says Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa (pic).

He said he would be calling for a meeting with the “big bosses” of all telcos soon.

“I received a report that 98% of areas throughout the country have connectivity but what is the meaning of high connectivity if consumers experience bad service?” he said.

Annuar spoke to reporters after officiating the launch of the Central Zone Keluarga Malaysia Digital Economy Centre (PEDi) in Felda Kahang Barat here yesterday.

Annuar said telcos must be serious in upgrading their network system as these companies had been making huge profits.

“I have asked the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to carry out an audit on each telco’s service performance.

“There are provisions under the Communications Act that allow the government to take action against telcos which fail to provide good service to consumers – including imposing fines,” he added.

Meanwhile at the event, Annuar said the ministry, through MCMC, planned to create more PEDi in Johor to enhance quality Internet connectivity for the people and boost their economy.

“So far, three new PEDi are in the implementation process located at Kampung Pagoh in Pagoh, Pulau Penarek in Ledang and Felda Linggiu in Tenggara.

“Some 11 more PEDi are still in the planning stages and involve locations in Tangkak, Bentayan, Simpang Jeram, Senggarang, Yong Peng, Mengkibol, Parit Yaani, Larkin, Stulang and Senai,” he said.

The addition of 14 new PEDi will bring the total number of such centres in Johor to 101 compared to the 87 at present.
