Zahid's corruption trial: Live updates

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is set to find whether he has to enter his defence on 47 corruption charges involving millions of ringgit from his charity foundation Yayasan Akalbudi (YAB).

High Court judge Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah is set to deliver his decision in the case on Monday (Jan 24) morning.

If the judge finds the prosecution has successfully proven a prima facie case against the accused, Ahmad Zahid would be ordered to enter his defence.

In the case that the prosecution failed to prove a prima facie case, the judge could order the Umno president to be acquitted and he would walk out a free man.


10:43am: Ahmad Zahid read out a short statement to the press before leaving the court complex.

“This is the ultimate decision of the judge and our compliance will not cease. Myself and my lawyers will do what is required under the procedures set by the court,” he said.

10:42am: The court agrees to push the date for the defence trial, which was initially scheduled in March, to start on April 26.

10:27am: Ahmad Zahid's lead counsel Hisyam Teh Poh Teik requests the court for a longer time to prepare for defence as his client has been ordered to enter defence on all 47 charges.

"We aren't able to meet the deadline that the defence starts on March 28.

"Can we suggest to my lord that the defence be given more time because we need to interview the witnesses... witness statements must be prepared," Hisyam said.

10:21am: Court resumes.

9:59am: Ahmad Zahid standing from inside the accused dock, talking to his family and Mat Hasan at the public gallery. His legal team are seen discussing amongst themselves.

9:50am: The court is in a short recess.

9:40am: Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah orders Ahmad Zahid to enter his defence on all 47 charges.

9:37am: Court is in session.

9:34am: Ahmad Zahid is seated at the public gallery inside the court room, chatting with his daughter.

9:04am: Ahmad Zahid arrives at KL High Court. He and his supporters say a few words of prayer before he smiles and makes his way in the court complex.

8:59am: Ahmad Zahid's daughter, Datuk Nurulhidayah, arrives also clad in white. She is accompanied by her husband.

8:54am: One of Ahmad Zahid's lawyers, Hamidi Mohd Noh, seen entering the court complex.

8:51am. Police remind the crowd to maintain social distancing and adhere to Covid-19 SOPs.

8:50am: Johor Umno deputy chief Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed arrives.

8:36am: Police begin closing the court gates, only allowing certain vehicles to enter. Supporters not allowed in.

8:28am: Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan also seen arriving at the court complex.

8:20am: Umno deputy president Datuk Mohamad Hasan is seen arriving. He waves to the small crowd gathered outside.

8am: Some of the supporters gather in front the court house.

7:50am: Ahmad Zahid's supporters, clad in white, seen hanging around a food court beside the court complex, some having breakfast.

7am: Member of the media begin staking out the KL High Court ahead of the proceedings.
